WHERE DO FOREIGNERS BUY PROPERTY IN TURKEY?

According to figures released this week by Turkey’s Land Registry General Directorate, some 73,000 foreigners own property in the country encompassing 38.42 million sqm.


In terms of number of people owning property in specific regions, Antalya tops the list with 26,031 people, followed by Mugla (12,865), Istanbul (8,830), Aydin (7,415), Bursa (5,241) and Izmir (4,145).


The province of Mugla, home to the town of Bodrum, is the most popular location for non-resident buyers in terms of the amount of square meters of property owned, followed by Antalya (3.81 million sqm), and Aydin (3 million sqm).


According to Turkish news portal Today’s Zaman, which translated the report, the province of Mugla, is the most desired location for British overseas buyers. The province has 12,865 foreign owners of land and property of which 10,039 are from the UK. The amount of land owned by Britons in the region totals 2.66 million sqm, followed by German, Dutch, Irish and US citizens.


Germans are one of the country’s biggest foreign owners of property, especially in Antalya where 6,324 Germans own 4,890 units of real estate encompassing 1.25 million sqm. Britons own 777,786 sqm of real estate in the city, followed by the Dutch (351,953 million sqm), and the Danish buyer (339,874 million sqm).


Of the 8,830 units of real estate owned by foreigners in Istanbul, 3,804 units were bought by 3,807 Greeks - totalling 509,342 million sqm. Greek buyers are also predominant in the town of Bursa. Of the 5,241 units of real estate owned there by foreigners, 4,819 is held by Greeks who own 1.16 million sqm of property.

According to the Land Registry figures, no foreigners own property or land in the cities of Agri, Bitlis, Hakkari, Mus, Slirt, Sanliurfa, Sirnak, Ardahan and Igdir. Gumushane and Van only have two foreigners that own property in these towns, an Uzbek and a British national respectively, while two Germans pay property tax in the Bayburt administration. In Adiyaman, apart from a US and German, no other non-nationals own property in the region.
